    Bangkok:

The National Museum of Royal Barges in Bangkok Noi houses eight magnificently decorated boats, each requiring 50 rowers. Well over 100 years old, the barges are rarely used but, when there is a river procession, it is a spectacular sight.

The largest barge is Suphannahong, 46 metres in length and requiring 54 rowers. Amazingly it was hewn from a single tree in 1911 for the King's personal barge and its prow represents a mythical swan. Also on view are Anantanagaraj and Anekcharphutchong, with their prows representing various figures from Thai mythology. Originally warcraft, the tradition of barge processions can be dated back to the early 13th century.

Modern-day outings for the boats include the odd occasion when they are used during the Tod Kathin Buddhist Festival. This is when the King delivers new robes to the monks at Wat Arun.
