Inside Cairo Citadel, Mohammad Ali Mosque is home to the tomb of Mohammad Ali Pasha, the 19th-century Egyptian ruler and founder of the country's last dynasty of Khedives and Kings. Inside, endless chandeliers illuminate Thuluth inscriptions and alabaster work.
The mosque is also known as the Alabaster Mosque because of the extensive use of this fine material. Designed by Greek architect, Yussuf Bushnaq, this is Cairo's most visible mosque, with its twin minarets and a central dome flanked by four half-domes. From the arcaded courtyard visitors can enjoy magnificent views across the city to the pyramids in Giza.
Please note that access on Fridays is strictly reserved for prayers only.
