The puppeteers in the Joe Louis Theatre in the Suan Lum Night Bazaar, skillfully work hand-crafted puppets. Dressed in elaborate costumes, they recreate traditional Thai stories. Visitors can also see beautiful displays of intricately detailed puppets while visiting the theatre

The puppeteer Joe Louis toured internationally and spent nearly 60 years making and performing with these puppets, so expect the ultimate in Thai craftmanship and entertainment.

The puppets each require three people to manipulate them and the range of gestures convey some very human emotions. The puppeteers wear masks, which are as carefully and lovingly crafted as the puppets themselves.

The process of making a puppet involves painstaking attention to details of expression and motifs of the costumes. Joe was recognised as a National Artist for his years of dedication to a type of puppetry that is like no other.
