Atmospheric and high-tech, the Vasa Museum is the main jewel of the museum-heavy Djurgården district. The museum is based around a design disaster - a top-heavy boat commissioned by King Gustav Vasa that sunk on its first outing in 1628.
Rescued in 1961, this great galleon takes pride of place in the main hall. The beautiful 17th-century garden is another experience, and with the long summer nights it makes an ideal place to absorb all the Swedish history that the museum has to offer. The museum also offers a series of ongoing exhibitions with a slant on all things nautical.
