    Philadelphia:

The original US Mint - otherwise known as the home of the almighty dollar - is located in historic Philadelphia, the capital of the US from 1790-1800. It is open to schoolchildren and those with Congressional sponsorship for tours.

This was the first federal building to be built under the US Constitution. With the help of Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury, construction of the Mint was authorised on 2 April 1792 and the first circulating coins - copper cents - were produced in March 1793. Gold and silver coins were produced soon after. President Washington was even said to have donated some of his silver for the minting.

Besides the Philadelphia Mint, only the Denver (CO) Mint produces coins that are circulated for everyday use. The US Mint business in general - with Mints in New York, California, Colorado and Washington DC - has grown to become a huge international marketing enterprise, pulling in more than $1 billion in annual revenues. In short, it is the world's largest manufacturer of coins, medals, and coin-based consumer products.
