The Queen Mary was the most advanced and luxurious transatlantic cruise ship of its day. During the war it was a troop transporter, but in the post-war years it returned to its original function. After air travel put paid to transatlantic liners, the ship was eventually purchased by the City of Long Beach and turned into a tourist attraction.
