The National Museum in San Borja is the most important museum in Lima. The exhibits, spread over three rambling floors, include scale models of most major ruins in Peru and highly advanced ceramics and textiles from pre-inca to colonial times.
Though Peru is primarily known for its Inca civilisation, it has a long history of advanced and sophisticated societies which flourished as far back as 900 BC. Chronologically ordered exhibits explore the different facets of these cultures, notably the Chavin, Moche, Nasca and Wari, with displays of textiles, ceramics and architectural models.
