    Hobart:

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart holds a wealth of information on the island's history and culture. Learn more about local geology, the indigenous population and wildlife, as well as colonial and Tasmanian art.

The museum is housed in an eclectic collection of buildings from various eras, although plans are afoot to extend and rebuild. This is one of the few places where visitors can catch a glimpse of the iconic Tasmanian tiger, with stuffed specimens, skeletons and videos of the extinct creature on permanent display.

There is a gift shop, bookshop and popular cafe in the downstairs foyer.
