    Memphis:

Site of Stax Records, the Stax Museum downtown honours all the artists that recorded there with interactive and historical exhibits and film clips. There's also music by the likes of Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding and Ike and Tina Turner.

Stax Records' legendary status in gritty, raw, stripped-down soul music - only Motown can claim bigger sales and influence - was grounded in the 15-year period in which the studio produced 167 pop chart toppers and 243 chart toppers in the R&B charts. Other Stax artists included Sam & Dave, Carla & Rufus Thomas and Booker T & the MGs.

But over and above its roller-coaster music-making, Stax was a product of the heyday of the Civil Rights movement, and was one of the most integrated companies of any kind, let alone being the fifth largest African-American owned business in 1974.

The museum tells the story not just of Stax but the wider soul story in Memphis, including Hi Records, which also produced a wealth of soul classics
