Situated inside the Vatican City in Rome, the marble-floored St Peter's Basilica is amongst the largest churches (with the largest brick dome) ever constructed. It features the works of some of the greatest Renaissance artists, including Bernini and Giotto.
Some of the art treasures inside the basilica are Bernini's 29-metre bronze baldachin, Michelangelo's Pietà and the astonishing Navicella mosaic by Giotto. On the outside the cathedral is framed by Bernini's masterpiece - the four-row colonnade on St Peter's Square, and dominated by Michelangelo's magnificent cupola. If you can manage to climb 330 steps to reach the top, the view of the square below and the city is unforgettable.
