The Salvador Allende Museum of Solidarity in Santiago houses one of the most important international collections of modern art in South America. Ranging from the 1950s to the 1980s, there are works by Matta, Miró, Oldenburg and Vassarely.
The museum was created in 1971 by a handful of intellectuals in honour of president Salvador Allende, founded on donations from artists. When Allende was thrown from power and replaced by a military dictatorship, the collection of over 400 pieces was hidden in the basement of the Museum of Modern Art. The building itself has witnessed some momentous historical changes from its time as the headquarters of DINA, what was once the Chilean secret police.
