The National Park of Timanfaya is a series of volcanic lava fields, declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1993. The ochre-coloured "lunar" landscape was once fertile, agricultural land, devastated by volcanic eruptions in 1730 and 1824.
To tour the park, most visitors take the tour bus, a trip that lasts 45 minutes. Walking trips are possible, but must be arranged in advance. It is also possible to take a short camel ride around the park.
At the entrance to the park, the Diabolo restaurant (designed by the renowned artist Cesar Manrique) cooks all its food in natural (lava) ovens.
