Housed in the west wing of the former King's Palace, the National Art Gallery is Sofia's prime location for visual art. It hosts 12,000 exhibits by the most prominent contemporary Bulgarian artists, including painter Zahari Zograph and sculptor Andrei Nikolov.
Established in 1948, the gallery has display halls boasting red velvet-covered walls, huge crystal mirrors, rococo plaster and marble fireplaces.
In the same building, the National Ethnographic Museum is worth a visit if you're interested in colourful exhibits and interesting trinkets.
