The Museum of London in the City traces London's history, from marshland to capital of the world. Seven galleries host temporary exhibitions. Don't miss the Temple of Mithras' marble sculptures, among the finest art works of Roman Britain.

Starting at the beginning, London Before London features the prehistoric and neolithic periods. Don't miss the River Wall, featuring 300 ancient objects dredged from its depths, or the reconstruction of the oldest Londoner ever found - a skeleton that is more than 5000 years old!

Roman London traces the contributions made by the southern Europeans to London's present shape. They first bridged the Thames and the city grew into a cosmopolitan port under their control. Dark Age, Saxon and medieval London travels through 1000 years of history from fifth-century Viking raids to the 15th-century city crammed with churches, guilds and merchant houses. Tudor and early Stuart London saw the city expand beyond the Roman walls and become a truly world-class city.

The Late Stuart London gallery, 18th Century London and World City Galleries, all of which are based on the lower floor, are closed until 2010 while a £20 million refurbishment of the museum takes place.
