One of America's most important art museums, the wide-ranging permanent collection at Philadelphia Museum of Art contains 300,000 works spanning 2000 years. There are also special exhibitions that are put on each year.
The museum is particularly known for its important collections of Pennsylvania German art, 18th-century and 19th-century furniture, silver by early Philadelphia and Pennsylvania craftsmen and works by prominent Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins.
