Among the most inventive redevelopment projects in Lille's 2004 European city of culture programme was the transformation of neglected buildings into cultural spaces - the "Maisons Folies". The biggest such project was arts centre Maison Folie Wazemmes.
The futuristic structure, which was once the old textile mill Leclercq, has been transformed by Dutch architect Lars Spuybroek into a performing space including a theatre, studios, workshops, exhibition spaces, a brasserie, a dining hall and a children's play area.
After some cultural inspiration, visitors can unwind with an all-over body scrub at the Zein Oriental Spa, a Turkish bath with beautiful tiling.
