A baroque palace with landscaped gardens in Alsergrund shelters the Liechtenstein Museum. Divert your gaze from elaborate stuccowork and Johann Michael Rottmayr's frescoes to appreciate the outstanding private art collection. Works by 17th-century painter Rubens include Decius Mus Cycle.
Reopened in 2004 after nearly 70 years, the palace's private art collection was returned to the heart of Vienna after being evacuated before the Nazis could get their hands on the artworks. They were taken to the family castle in Vaduz, in Liechtenstein itself, for safety.
