Lalbagh Fort was built by Prince Mohammed Azam in 1678 as a Mughal palace fortress. See the tomb of Pari Bibi (Fairy Lady), Lalbagh Mosque, the Audience Hall and the Hammam of Nawah Shaista Khan, now a museum.

The fort was never finished as Prince Mohammed Azam's vice-royalty came to an end. It was the scene of a bloody battle during the 1857 war of independence, when 260 sepoys (native soldiers) stationed here revolted against the British.
