The Kerameikos was the potters' quarter of classical Athens and also the city's official cemetery. Today it is a fascinating archaeological site, featuring parts of the city walls, the ancient gates, tombstones and other burial monuments.
Excavations in the 19th century revealed the city wall built in the 5th century BC, which divided the Kerameikos into two areas with the Dipylon Gate marking the route from the Panathenaic Way to the Acropolis, and the Sacred Gate on the Sacred Way to Eleusis.
Smaller finds are housed in the nearby Museum of Kerameikos and in the National Museum of Athens.
