    Atlanta:

The permanent collection at Atlanta's High Museum of Art contains significant holdings of 19th- and 20th-century American art, and a downtown annex has an impressive folk art collection. With over 2500 works, the photography collection is the feather in the museum's hat.

Highlights include Alfred Stieglitz's Portrait of John Marin and Edward Steichen's Dana and the Apple. Man Ray's 1935 solarised portrait of Max Ernst is also well worth a peek.

The striking white building that houses the main collections opened to worldwide acclaim in 1983. Designed by architect Richard Meier, it has received numerous design awards over the years. A new phase in the museum's history is being undertaken with the 177,000 square foot expansion, which includes three new buildings, thus creating "a village for the arts."
