    Reykjavik:

Designed by state architect Githjon Samuelson in 1937, Hallgrimskirkja church is a minimalist monolith lording over Reykjavík. Take a trip to the viewing platform in its tower for spectacular views of this Nordic capital from one of the city's defining structures.

Hallgrimskirkja's angular 75 metre-high bell tower dominates from its hill-top position and its stark exterior can be seen from vantage points throughout Reykjavík.

Allegedly designed to resemble the basalt lava flows of Iceland's volcanic landscape, the building can still be said to be in a mercurial state today - at certain times of the year it catches the Arctic sun, turning the bricks a brilliant orange.
