    Bruges:

Bruges' Groeninge Museum boasts a large collection of art from the 15th century to Modern Art. Wander from one period to the next and don't miss the Flemish Masters, including Van Eyck's masterpiece, The Madonna with Canon Van der Paele.

The museum's 11 rooms chart the evolution of Flemish art, starting with an impressive number of masterpieces commissioned by the city of Bruges during the 15th and 16th centuries. Witness the works of the Primitives (described as such for their dismissal of linear perspective) with their detailed reproduction of daily life and their keen interest in religious symbolism. The Italian renaissance follows, with its revival of classical antiquity and fascination for anatomy.

But it's not all ancient history; lovers of 20th century art should head straight for the Expressionism and Surrealism rooms, where the works by Paul Delvaux and René Magritte will amaze or bewilder. A Modern Art room also features a good mix of abstract art, Pop Art, hyperrealism and other currents.

Please note: due to major refurbishment works, some parts of the museum are closed until August 2010. The permanent collection is accessible, and visitors benefit from reduced admission prices (€6; concessions €5) until the work is complete.
