A hybrid between theme park and living museum, Gold Reef City brings museums, education, rides and entertainment to a former gold shaft in Ormonde. It aims to replicate Johannesburg's mining conditions during the gold-rush era.
N.14 shaft, around which the park is based, was once the richest gold mine in the world. Today the mine is quiet apart from the guides and visitors who roam the remaining underground passages.
Above ground, there is turn-of-the-century Jo'burg, with craft shops, restaurants, a hotel, casino and a Victorian fairground as well as a reproduction of miners' houses and a gold museum.
