Over its 420 acres, the Deering Estate at Cutler offers tours of endangered natural areas, historic and archaeological sites. In addition, the natural beauty of the estate's gardens makes it a great place to escape the bustle of Miami.
What makes this park so unusual, however, is the 1896 cottage that sits on it. Richmond Cottage was purchased by wealthy industrialist Charles Deering in 1913. It was remodelled into the winter home of Deering and his family and is built in a beautiful Mediterranean Revival style.
Visitors will find rare and native plants here, including orchids, ferns and over 40 species of tree. Grey foxes, spotted skunks, squirrels, bobcats and birds also inhabit the area. Fossil bones dating back 50,000 years have also been found on the site.
