Shooting a blank over St Petersburg's Winter Palace on 25 October 1917, the Cruiser Aurora started the Russian Revolution. Russia's oldest surviving naval vessel, it is now a floating museum on the River Neva. Tours take you inside the engine room.
The Aurora was commissioned in 1903 to join the Russian Empire's Pacific Fleet. It became a potent symbol of the Russian Revolution after the crew mutinied and then gave the signal for the assault on the Winter Palace.
These days the ship is a floating museum, looked after by members of the Nakhimov Naval School. Visitors can explore aboard and, for a small charge, have a tour of the engine rooms as well.
