    Lille:

Lille's Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Treille started life as the church of St Pierre. Having been partially destroyed in the Revolution, many attempts were made to rebuild it. The city finally managed it 1999, in time to see the millennium.

Originally, a competition was held to choose the best design for the rebuilding project. By 1913 the partly-finished cathedral was being used by the new Bishop of Lille, but due to wars and economic troubles, little progress was made. It was finally decided to create a modern facade to complete the building in time to celebrate the beginning of the 21st century.

Still a thriving centre of worship, there's a regular mass at noon on Sundays, and all the bells and incense you could possibly want when the Bishop ordains new priests several times a year.
