Banganga Tank in Mumbai's Malabar Hill area is a sacred rectangular pool where pilgrims bathe. Surrounded by ancient turreted temples, garlanded shrines and towering apartment blocks, traditional life coexists alongside unbridled modernisation, making for an interesting trip.

According to local mythology, the water in the pool is from the River Ganges. It sprang forth when the Hindu god Ram stopped at the spot while searching for his kidnapped wife Sita. Exhausted and thirsty, he asked his brother Laxman to bring him some water. Laxman shot an arrow into the ground and waters sprang forth from a tributary of the Ganges, which lies more than a thousand miles away.
