    Sydney:

The premier Art Gallery of New South Wales has a commanding position in the Domain. Significant European, Asian and contemporary collections are masterfully hung in traditional and modern surrounds. Australian art, featuring Roberts, Streeton and McCubbin, is particularly good.

One of Australia's leading art museums, the Art Gallery of NSW is located within beautiful parklands overlooking Sydney Harbour and is only 15 minutes' walk from the city centre. A small band of Sydneysiders conceived the idea of a gallery for the "mother colony" in the 1870s. First housed in Clark's Assembly Rooms between 1875 and 1879, the plan was to transfer it to the Crystal Palace. However, it was into a hastily built iron and timber building, adjacent to the palace that the collection was moved.
