    Reykjavik:

In 2001 a Viking-age longhouse dating from around 930 AD was uncovered in the centre of Reykjavík. The Reykjavík 871 +/-2 Settlement Museum tells the fascinating story behind these ruins, the oldest to have been found in the city.

Visitors to the Reykjavík 871 +/-2 Settlement Museum can learn about the life and times of early settlers through multimedia displays, models and other artefacts discovered nearby. The name of the museum comes from the dating of the layer of volcanic ash, formed in an eruption in 871, give or take a couple of years.

Although the museum itself impresses with its highly modern and well structured layout, its focus remains rooted in the past and its ancient artefacts offer an unparalleled insight into the origins of Icelandic civilisation.
