The Sambadrome (Sambódromo) is a purpose-built parade ground along Rio's Avenida Marques de Sapucaí. Samba schools parade here each year during the huge celebration of music, dancing and colour that is Carnival.
It was built in 1984 and has room for 65,000 spectators along its 700-metre stretch. From December until Carnival, samba schools rehearse here. For the rest of the year it hosts concerts and shows, as well as classes for local public schools.
