There are different things to do and places to see during Christmas Season and New Year's Eve in Spain. Christmas in Spain starts during the middle of December and doesn't stop until January 6. Christmas in Spain would include lottery, nativity scenes and lots of great food.
During the Christmas Eve, most bars will be closed and there won't be many restaurants open since the Spaniards believe that Christmas is a family affair. Events are interrupted at midnight by the bells of the local church calling people to attend 'misa del gallo' which is known in English as the mass of the rooster. The biggest misa del gallo is at the Benedictine monastery at Montserrat near Barcelona. During Christmas, couples will normally spend their Christmas Eve with one set of parents and Christmas day with the other.
New Year in Spain is also one of the most important festivals in the country. It is celebrated with lots of pomp and grandeur. During the New Year's Eve, the Spaniards tend to stay in their houses with their family members. It is also a tradition to eat twelve grapes on every stroke of the clock when it approaches the New Year to bring good luck for every month of the year.
After midnight, people go out and enjoy the New Year with their friends. They go to nightclubs, restaurants and hotels that are some of the main attractions for the visitors to see.
In big cities such as Barcelona and Madrid, people come from the streets on midnight and spend the New Year partying and dancing with the crowd. As the celebrations are happening, lots of fireworks and firecrackers are lit up and enjoyed by the people.
