    Rome:

Bustling Piazza Navona in central Rome, is perfect for people-watching. Built in the 15th century, its lavish fountains and open-air bars make this a popular meeting point, where Romans sip lattes and browse for bargains from street traders.

Originally Piazza Navona was a place for games, tournaments, processions and shows, even being filled with water for princes to parade their ships. Now it fills with stalls selling sweets and toys every year from the beginning of December until Epiphany.

The main attractions are its three famous fountains - Fontana del Moro, Fontana di Nettuno and in the centre of the square Bernini's magnificent Fontana dei Fiumi. There are also four allegorical statues portraying the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the Rio de la Plata, symbolic of the four corners of the world.

Other highlights to see include the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, commissioned in 1652 by Pope Innocent X and built on the site where, according to legend, St Agnes was stripped naked but miraculously saved from disgrace by extraordinary hair growth.
