The gallery brings together the private collections of the entire Medici family and was collated between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. Astonishingly by modern standards, these paintings are arranged without an eye for chronology, theme or even authorship - the intention is purely decorative and the shape of frames was a decisive factor in deciding which paintings went on which walls.
