    Venice:

Dating back to 1516, the Ghetto (Jewish Quarter) in Cannaregio was the first area in Europe where Jews were forced to live and work. The area brims with once-crowded houses and synagogues. The Jewish Museum is particularly interesting.

Allowed to practise only certain professions and forbidden to leave this area from sunset to sunrise, the Jews were kept "prisoners" for more than two and a half centuries, until Napoleon conquered Venice and abolished the law. The Jewish Museum is home to objects such as clothes and jewellery that bear witness to the Jewish tradition.
