    London:

The BFI Southbank (formerly the National Film Theatre) in London screens more than 1000 films a year, from rare silent comedies to cult movies and television programmes from its archives. It also hosts gala screenings and on-stage interviews with film-makers, actors, producers, critics and writers.

The main event of the year is the BFI London Film Festival with two weeks of screenings showcasing the best of contemporary world cinema. The BFI also hosts the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.

In the centre of Waterloo roundabout there is the BFI's Imax cinema - the UK's biggest cinema screen, more than 20 metres high and 26 metres wide with a 11,600-watt digital surround-sound system and an IMAX projection system that all combine to immerse viewers, making them feel as if they are literally "in the picture".
