Finland on the Holidays
Finland spends its Christmas and New Year in a unique way. During the Christmas Season, houses are cleaned very well to welcome Christmas.
Hours are spent by the people in cooking and baking special treats for the Christmas festivities. During December 13, the Finnish celebrate the day of Saint Lucia with lots of lighted candles. Many Finnish families also visit the cemeteries to remember the dead and have porridge with the family.
A great place to visit during Christmas is the Lapland. The place is believed to be the real place where the true Santa Claus lives. You can visit Santa in Lapland and sit on his lap while his assistants give you traditional biscuits. You can also spend your Christmas at the Kakslautten which specializes in celebrating a traditional Finnish Christmas. The place has a magical family atmosphere that is great for both the young and old.

Helsinki is a city in Northern Europe near the Baltic Sea. It is the capital of Finland and the largest city in the country. It is known to be the historic Center of Finnish politics, culture and economics. It is a vibrant and modern city with a great display of fireworks during the New Year’s Eve.
During the New Year, Helsinki features a jumping nightlife, fine restaurants and other historical attractions as well as Finland-style shopping. Socializing and celebrating can be done at the Helsinki Cathedral where the bells are rung every midnight on New Year’s Eve. After the bells are rung, fireworks follow and other celebrations happen outside that vary depending on the weather of the city.

Santa is on His Way to Helsinki
A great number of events take place in Helsinki during the Christmas Season. Many exhibitions, fairs, festivals and parades occur as the Christmas Eve approaches. Christmas markets are found almost everywhere and sell different kinds of items.
Some famous Christmas markets in the city include the St. Thomas Christmas Market and the Christmas Fair at Old Student House. The St. Thomas Christmas Market has over 120 stall that mostly sell crafts, bakes goods and other Christmas decorations and specialties. At times Santa Claus can also be in the market greeting guests and taking pictures with the children. The Christmas Fair at Old Student House on the other hand has around 160 vendors that sell handicrafts and other unique products that include scented candles, knitted goods, ceramics, cards and clothes.
