Info & Description

Elephant Backpacker is a cheap and cheerful hostel centrally located between Sydney’s red light district (Kings Cross) and the City Center. We overlook Sydney’s main gardens – Hyde Park, Domain and Botanical Gardens. The hostel is housed in a Victorian period hotel built in 1892. Our rooms are large with high ceilings and our three accommodation floors each have communal ladies and men’s showers and separate toilet cubicles.

Our ground floor consists of the communal kitchen, dining area, television lounge, reception and our newly opened cafe that serves yummy meals from 7am to 11pm daily.

Our hostel has 220 beds over 3 accommodation floors ranging in a variety of room configurations. The guest mix varies from your traditional young backpackers both travelling and working, to grey nomads and Australians and New Zealanders on holidays.

Our dorm rooms are made up by our housekeeping team with a bottom sheet (all commercially laundered). You collect your top sheet, pillow and blanket from reception upon check in. Linen is included in your room rate. Our private doubles and twins already have your bed made up waiting for your arrival.

We can cater and welcome guests with disabilities. We have an accommodation room on the ground floor together with toilet and shower facilities catering for wheelchair access. Our hostel has an elevator should you wish to stay in rooms on a higher floor.

So if you are after a friendly hostel that is cheap and cheerful – Elephant is for you.

It was horrible. The linen we’re dirty when we arrived VERY dirty. The floor as well. The toilets were partly not useable and we saw cockroaches in the building. For this amount of money you can get something WAY BETTER. we left early because we weren’t comfortable there.

The bed is comfortable but the other tenants were scattering their stuff all over the place. It was crazy. It felt like I was in a land mine and trying to avoid detonating the mines!

Overall the hostel was great. Location was right near the city and was walking distance to Kings Cross (night life). Can't fault the cleanliness or the security which was great being a solo female traveller. Hostel has organised activities that were good for meeting people + a new café that serves yummy food at very cheap prices (compared to the rest of Sydney)

I had the best time at Elephant. The staff were amazing and created a travel plan of Sydney for me! Hostel is big but it has a family feel with travellers from Europe - so great crowd to mix. I plan to return after my travels.

Read mixed reviews but thought worth a try - heard some good word of mouth! it was awesome - they organise entertanment daily to pubs and clubs that are fun and cheap. very friendly atmosphere and staff allways helpful they were on a mission to kill any bug or fly and kept hoovering my room (sometimes when I wanted to sleep late from too much of nite before) all good:)

Very friendly caring hostel dispite being big. Rooms have clean sheets and staff try to put you in with other people they think you will like. Made friends specielly at entertainments nights. Wld recommend :)

I`ve just had a wonderful stay at HBC Hostel and even prolonged my stay one extra week because I enjoyd it so much. The people here, both personal and guests, are extremly welcoming and helpful for confused turists. There were events planned every night eith good deals on great clubs. The café next door have a great breakfast meny and nice dinner food served with lots og hospitallity. The only bad thing I could say is that it`s often loud in the common areas so it`s not suitable for people who need a quiet place. But if you wanna have a good time, live at HBC :)

the kitchen is very too small and the fridge extremely nasty! It doesn't make you want to cook there! some of the resident had to share one bed even if they paid for 2 and the backpacker can get extremely load by night. If you're looking to have fun, it's the good place, but definitely not for a quite time in Sydney.

It is very well locate it, walking distance to many atractions, bus and train stops. The rooms are very big and the hostels looks clean all the time.

This establishment is fine! Near to town, cleaned regularly, things are being renovated... good for staying! AND free breakfast! Definite recommendation. (That's from a South African living in Scotland)
