    Lisbon:

As a testament to centuries of Lisbon history, St George's Castle stands on top of the city's highest hill, dominating the ancient Alfama quarter. After enjoying panoramic city views, climb the reconstructed battlements for even headier sights.

The castle was originally constructed in the 5th century by the Visigoths. It was built up by the Moors before being reclaimed by the Christians in the 12th century and later becoming a royal residence from the 14th-16th centuries.

Today there is a multimedia exhibition giving insight into the building's history, as well as an upmarket restaurant and a café. The grounds offer fantastic views over the city.
