The ruins of the Roman Forum are the centrepiece of Rome's historic centre. This was the political, economic and religious centre of ancient Rome, filled with magnificent public buildings. Visitors stroll to the Curia, where Julius Caesar met the senators.
The remains of the Roman Forum include monuments such as the Arch of Titus, built in honour of Rome's victory over Jerusalem in 70 BC, and the Temple of Vestal, where the sacred Roman fire was kept burning to symbolise its vitality. There is also the Arch of Septimius Severus, which was erected in 203 AD to commemorate the Parthian victories of Emperor Septimius Severus and his two sons, Caracalla and Geta.
In the Middle Ages, though the memory of the Forum Romanum persisted, its monuments were for the most part buried under debris, and its location was forgotten. The Roman Forum was rediscovered in the 16th century, but was only fully excavated in the early 20th century.
