    Paris:

In the heart of the Marais, by the Place des Vosges, is the intriguing Musée Carnavalet, keeper of Paris' memories. The museum is actually two buildings, the Hôtel Carnavalet and the Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau, joined by a passage.

The 16th- and 17th-century buildings house an absorbing permanent collection, including Gallo-Roman wall paintings from the rue Amyot, clothes and ornaments, religious and funerary objects and sculptures. The renovated Orangerie - reminiscent of the Orangerie at the Tuileries - houses archaeological treasures uncovered from Bercy in the 1990s, which dig deep into the ancient history of Paris. Associated with the museum are the Paris catacombs and the archaeological crypt of Notre-Dame.
