    Madrid:

The Costume Museum (Museo del Traje) in Madrid's Moncloa district displays some of Spain's most precious threads, from tenderly preserved medieval garments to contemporary designer couture by Dior and Balenciaga. A free audio guide is included in the entrance fee.

As the displays are ordered chronologically, history fans may want to linger in the first rooms. Clothing artefacts from medieval times are few and far between, but the museum has a good range of paintings and sculptures to demonstrate Spanish clothing trends before 1700.

The 18th-century collection showcases different garments and accessories, from bodices to fans and richly embroidered jackets.

In the contemporary section there is a special tribute to Christian Dior, as well as pieces by world-famous Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga and haute couture by Pedro Rodriguéz.
