    Rome:

Rome boasts over 300km of underground burial corridors, of which a small fraction are open to the public. These include the Catacombs of Saint Domitilla, the oldest and most enjoyable of all, covering 15km on three different levels.

Dating back (as do most of the tunnels) to the fourth and fifth centuries AD, these catacombs are also the only ones where visitors can still see bones - the rest have emptied their tombs to rebury the remains in ossuaries on the inaccessible lower levels.

The tradition of underground burial originates in the pagan religion, but the catacombs also played an essential role for Christians. Their secluded location was ideal to perform forbidden ceremonies and to hide the bodies of saints.
