The Basilica of Saint Ambrose is one of Milan's most sacred buildings, housing the tomb of the great Saint Ambrose (340-397AD). The interior has three naves, richly decorated by the efforts of famous craftsmen over the centuries.
The Basilica's foundations date back to the 4th century AD. It was rebuilt and enlarged in the 8th and 9th centuries, assuming its Romanesque appearance during the 11th and 12th centuries. Two bell towers, one built in the 9th century, the other in the 12th century, flank the church.
Note the incredible 5th-century mosaics in the Chapel of San Vittore in the Golden Sky and the finely wrought Main Altar, constructed from hard stone, gold, silver and enamel - a world-famous masterpiece of Carolingian goldsmithery from the hands of Volvinio (835AD).
